The Tryall Club: Past and Present

Anticipation is one of many luxury villas at the famed Tryall Club, located 12 miles west of Montego Bay on Jamaica’s northwest coast. Tryall has a rich history as well as exquisite onsite facilities and activities. When you stay at Anticipation, you will have access to all Tryall has to offer. Let’s explore Tryall’s past and present!

History of the Tryall Club

Like most of Jamaica, the land now owned by the Tryall Club was once inhabited by the Arawak people, an indigenous Native American tribe [i]. The Spanish colonized the area and began using the land for various purposes [ii]. Many of Tryall’s landmarks were built during the 17th Century, such as the Great House, the Water Wheel, and the Tryall Fort [iii]. The mixed-use land became designated as a sugar plantation in the 18th Century [iv]. The Water Wheel was used to power the sugar mill, which crushed sugar cane to extract the juices [v]. The Water Wheel at Tryall is the only functional water wheel left in Jamaica today [vi].

The first owner of the plantation, Robert Allen, died during the Baptist Slave Rebellion of 1831 [vii]. Allen’s son inherited the property and sold it to J. H. Parker in 1900, who maintained it as a sugar plantation [viii]. Eugene Brown purchased the property in 1933 and converted the crops to coconut and pimento. Eventually, William and Ida DeLisser became the owners of the property and, in light of the decline the sugar trade, decided to turn the Great House in a guest house in the 1940’s [ix]. The property was sold to a group of entrepreneurs in 1957 who saw enormous potential in it as a site for luxury villas. They began to construct villas and a golf course soon after purchasing the property [x].

Today, The Tryall Club boasts 90 different villas, including Anticipation. Anticipation is equipped with a full, highly trained staff and luxury amenities. The club itself has many fantastic amenities and facilities, including watersports, tennis, tours, and a health and beauty center. When you stay with us at Anticipation, your temporary membership to Tryall gives you access to all of Tryall’s facilities making your stay truly unforgettable.

Dining at the Tryall Club

A private, gourmet chef is employed at Anticipation to prepare all your meals exactly to your tastes in the privacy of your villa. Additionally, Tryall offers a variety of specialty onsite dining options if you wish to go out during your stay.

The Great House boasts a restaurant and bar. During the winter season, diners can enjoy live jazz and Bossa Nova performances. Bossa Nova is a style of Brazilian dance, similar to the samba. Complimentary afternoon tea is served daily on the veranda and the terrace. Please note that the Great House has a dress code. There is no denim allowed in the Great House and men must wear collared shirts.

The Beach Café, located at the Tryall’s private beach, is a great option for lunch. All foods are made from seasonal, organic vegetables grown in an on-site garden.

On Monday evenings, Tryall provides a Beach Barbeque. There is also a Reggae Night on Thursday evenings, where traditional Jamaican foods are served. Great House does not serve dinner during these events.

Additionally, Tryall offers private dining in various locations on the estate, served by a butler. One popular location is in the gazebo at the end of the old pier, as pictured below. Sports, Health, and Wellness

There are a variety of sports offered at the Tryall. With your membership, you have access to an ocean-facing gym and a yoga deck with regular yoga classes. Outside, there is a volleyball court, basketball court, and a football field. You can also play croquet on the lawn.

At an additional cost, you can play a game of golf in Tryall’s extensive golf course. Tryall’s tee times and rates can be found here. Tryall offers a Golf Academy, where you can improve your skills with a private tutor or in small group instruction. We would be happy to assist you in scheduling golf lessons or tee time. There is also year-round tennis for an additional cost. Tryall offers tennis lessons for both adults and children. We would be happy to help you schedule tennis lessons during your stay. Information about tennis lessons prices and other fees can be found here. Please note that white dress is required for those who wish to play tennis.

The Beauty and Massage Center offers services such as massages, facials, hair styling, and spa treatments at an additional cost. We would be happy to help you schedule a spa treatment during your stay at Anticipation.

At the private beach, there is parasailing, wakeboarding, water skiing, tubing, banana boat rides, and kayaking. There is a daily ride in a glass bottom boat, where you and your family can stay dry while observing Jamaica’s ocean life and landscape. Guests may also reserve a private glass bottom boat ride for an additional cost. Guests can also schedule private snorkeling tours to visit the offshore reef. There is also scuba diving for an additional cost. Guests have the opportunity to get open water and advanced open water certification through Tryall’s full PADI scuba diving program during their stay. Shopping

There are many opportunities for onsite shopping. Tryall provides four different shopping locations including the Tryall Market, Tryall Boutique, Tennis Pro Shop, and Sin Ting Beachy. These shops sell everything you might need during your stay, including clothing, sunscreen, souvenirs, and golf and tennis wear and equipment. Local craft vendors are invited onsite to sell their crafts each day. There are also regular art shows at the Great House where guests can purchase paintings from local Jamaican artists. Onsite and Offsite Tours

Tryall offers a variety of onsite and offsite tours for guests to enjoy during their stay.

Tryall’s onsite tours feature the beauty and historical significance of the estate. Nearly every bird native to Jamaica can be found on the Tryall estate. In light of this, there are daily onsite bird tours provided by the Environmental Manager. There are also tours of the many historical landmarks, such as the Water Wheel. Both of these tours require a reservation which can be made through the Front Desk or Guest Services. We would be happy to assist you in booking an onsite tour during your stay with us.

There are also many offsite tours provided by the touring company, Island Routes. Whether you are interested in seeing local plants and animals, having a few adventures, or learning more about Jamaican history or culture, Island Routes has a tour you’re sure to enjoy.
